People We Admire: Sherry Petersik from Young House Love
One of our all-time favorite blogs, Young House Love is a pretty big deal nowadays and not just to us. With press from big names like HGTV, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Nest, Joss & Main (one of our fave online boutiques) and tons more, it’s no wonder we adore Sherry Petersik, who is the writing genius behind this beloved DIY home blog.
So you may be wondering, “how did Young House Love come to life?” Well back in 2006, Sherry and her husband, John, bought their first house and thought it needed some major face lifting. With that being said, John was the one who originally came up with the idea to start blogging about remodels in their kitchen. Despite rolling her eyes at first, Sherry fell in love with blogging and decided to track progress on updates to the entire home, showcase DIY projects and insights into her life. This kept many readers (including us) coming back for more and more and more and more.
While we’re not at all surprised about just how popular Young House Love has become, Sherry apparently was completely taken off guard by just how loved her blog truly is. During an interview for a podcast with Brazen Life, she stated that she decided to “…see where this goes and after a year, it probably won’t work and I’ll go back to copywriting.” Of course, she hasn’t gone back to the world of copywriting since then…and so this began the phenomenon we know and love as Young House Love!
But the witty, funny and personality-filled writing isn’t the only reason we and tens of thousands of people are major fans. Since the purchase of their first home and all the renovations that followed, Sherry has been there with a camera ready for shots and videos of their projects. And these DIY-ers don’t just do before and after shots like most DIY home project blogs; they show the whole entire process from demolition to their failed attempts to the finished product. Something we all can relate to!
And since Young House Love has blown up, she and her hubby have become somewhat of celebrities. They have their own column in the DIY Magazine, they’ve been on The Nate Berkus Show and featured in CNN, Forbes and People. Oh and by the way, they have a chalkboard wall in their office – we totally LOVE it!
Now, the Petersiks are on their second house and making all kinds of upgrades to it as well. Their chic ranch-style home has come from a 50-year-old house to a young and hip living space. Catch up with their latest blog post here!
To say the least, Sherry Petersik is a totally fab and an awesome role model that has turned her passion into an unexpected but highly praised career. Our designer, Candace Jean, can truly relate to this fact with the start and success of Chalkboard China!
